ADULT BIBLE STUDY GROUP

Dear Readers,
Today we have the report of the Adult Bible Study written by Brother Alan Yeow. May this report provoke many of our brethren to study the Word of God and encourage one another in the faith!

Are you an adult seeking to “occupy” till the Lord Jesus Christ returns? Why not join the Adult Bible Study? “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Lovingly in Christ,
Preacher Clement Chew

Adult Bible Study Group – 2015 (A Report by Yeow Yoon Fei, Alan)

Thank God for preserving the Adult Bible Study Group all these years. By the grace of God in 2013, the “Adult Bible Study Group” was formed out of the previous Men’s and Ladies’ Fellowship. The aim is to minister to adults in Tabernacle BPC. We gather monthly (normally 3rd Saturday of the month) at a member’s home for a book or topical study. There is also a thanksgiving and sharing session, prayers for one another, followed by sweet fellowship over supper.

We started our 1st meeting on 19 January 2013 with the study of the book of Numbers led by Elder John Leong. This was followed by a study of “Charismatism” in 2014.

Last year, we studied “The Unlikely Heroes in the Bible”. These include:

Jan – Enoch (The man who walked with God faithfully for about 300 years)
Feb – Joseph (The man who understood that God meant it for good even in suffering and loss)
Mar – Miriam (The leading lady of the Exodus who submitted and rested in God’s power)
Apr – Gideon & Samson (The weakness of man and power of God)
May – Jonathan (The man who would NOT be King)
Jul – Jonah (The flawed prophet that God used to cause an entire city to repent)
Aug – Esther (Where is God in the book of Esther?)
Sep – John the Baptist (The true meaning of Greatness)
Oct – James (The brother of our Lord who was graciously saved to be used by the Lord)
Nov – Mark & Onesimus (A tale of two Runaways)

Lessons Learnt from “The Unlikely Heroes in the Bible”

1) God created every unlikely hero of the faith differently, whether it be their personality, background, experience, or age, but God can use each of them to serve Him and do His work.

By application, God also created each of us differently. There are no two persons who are the same in this world. God also equipped each Christian with different spiritual gifts. “But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” (Eph. 4:7) We must not despise our spiritual gifts but rather exercise them to serve and glorify the Lord. In 2016, may we pray that the Lord will lead and guide us in exercising our spiritual gifts to serve Him in whatever capacity He wants us to.

2) All the unlikely heroes of the faith demonstrated faith in the Lord and faithfulness unto Christ.

We are often men of little faith. When everything seems to go smoothly, we tend to forget our Almighty God who has been guiding and leading us all the way. We would often talk to a close friend, rant and complain on social media, “Google” for a solution, moan and complain for our “misfortune” instead of turning to God in prayer as our first line of defence. Let us resolve to pray without ceasing this year, committing every matter, minute or apparently insurmount-able task to our good Lord who will be our intercessor and a very present help in trouble. Prayers ought to be brought before the throne of grace first and not our last resort in trials and difficulties.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” (James 1:5)

Conclusion

Thank God for the opportunity given to the adults to come together to study the precious Word of God. We pray that the Lord will continue to preserve this group and also grant Elder John the strength and wisdom to lead and teach the Bible.

We thank God for His help to prepare the meeting schedule and learning topics for 2016. God-willing, we shall study “The Sinfulness of Sin” led by Brother Isaac Koh during the 1st half of the year and the book of Nehemiah led by Elder John Leong in the 2nd half of the year. We welcome all adults and young adults to join the meeting for a precious time of learning the Word of everlasting life. May we continue to growth spiritually stronger each year through the learning of God’s Word.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
